Interview – Dr. Diane Lipsett

Dr. Lipsett is our New Testament professor and an extremely popular, knowledgeable presence in our midst. You will have her for New Testament, but you would be remiss not to have her for more! Hope you enjoy!

1. Who are you? At Wake Forest, I’m a teacher-scholar-sharer in community. Outside of Wake, I’m a spouse-mom-friend-Sunday School teacher-Special Olympics fan who also likes to hike in the mountains, read novels and poetry, and cook big meals with family and friends.

2. How would you describe Wake Div School? Challenging and big enough to stretch you; small and encouraging enough to support you.

3. What will be your role working with first year students, second year, third year? I teach the required two-semester sequence in New Testament, which means few students can actually avoid me. I teach other electives in NT and Christian Origins and a fun (truly) intermediate Greek readings course. My research and writing these days are focused on the Gospel of Matthew and on 2nd -century Christian narratives not in the NT.

4. What was your Ph.D. thesis in? Three ancient Christian or Jewish conversion stories in which identity transformation comes about through an interplay of erotic desire and ascetic self-restraint — the Shepherd of Hermas, the Acts of Paul and Thecla, and Joseph and Aseneth.

5. What do you enjoy the most about your position at Wake, in relationship to your interactions with students? I delight in lively class discussions. I also feel very privileged to observe the ways students grow in their own gifts and graces while at the Div School.

6. What is one place that 1st years new to the Winston-Salem area HAVE to know about before coming? Assuming that others can recommend more *fun* places, let me mention Simply Yummy — good coffee and light food a quick walk from campus — a change of scene for working or talking.

7. What book would be helpful to read this summer if they had time to prepare them, just a little bit, for Divinity school? The first four short, funny, and wise chapters in Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird, to help get ready for the writing life.

I’m Ellen, and I’m a second-year. I’m doing the dual-degree program with Divinity and Counseling, so I am entering my last year at Wake Div. My first year was really amazing…many books, assignments, reflections, come-to-Jesus talks, papers, walks to satellite parking, cups of coffee, community lunches, and worship services later, I feel so thankful to be here and to be entering another year soon. When I think about my experience at Wake thus far, a couple of words come to mind: challenge and community. ”Challenge” because classes can get pretty overwhelming. I have found it to be very difficult to keep up at times, but in the long run, challenge was what I was looking for, and I certainly got it! Then, I think “community” because of how close-knit I have experienced this school to be. We stick together. I feel daily embraced by this unique group of students, staff, and faculty. Welcome, first years!

Hey all: many of you all probably know, but the parking decal thing online at Wake is not working. This is the University’s fault at this point, so don’t worry. As soon as it’s fixed, we’ll let you know. This happened last year, as well, so not to worry. We’ll let you know as soon as it is fixed.

Next student testimonial: Kyle Ryan Caudle (nice last name). He is a second year who has been here for a couple years, actually, a native of Winston-Salem, and a great guy. His band, “Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets,” are really great. You’ll see them soon.

Looking Thoughtful..

My name is Kyle Caudle and I am a rising second year student. I was born in Winston-Salem at Forsyth Medical Center where my wife Charla now works as a Physical Therapist. Most recently I served as Associate Director of Student Ministries at FBC Winston-Salem. I first learned of Wake Divinity through the Fuller Brothers (both of whom are Wake Div. alumni). They introduced me to the school and I quickly realized just how important community is at Wake Divinity. What I like best about this commuity is the diversity of the faculty and student body in regards to age, race, gender, and theological perspectives. This constantly reminds me that the body of Christ transcends all expectation. When not hanging out in the Div Lounge I spend my days cooking, gardening, exercising and spend my nights rocking out with my band. Post-div school plans could involve church and community ministry and/or more school.

2009 Vehicle Registration

Created On: 06/18/09

Parking Fees for 2009-2010 are as follows:

On-Campus Parking $500 incoming academic year
600 Satellite Parking decals are available at no cost. Historically we have found that since there is a limit, delaying registration for this decal will result in you not having this option this academic year. We suggest you register as close to August 1^st as possible. Note: After you choose this decal, you cannot convert back to campus parking and are obligated for the entire academic year. The fine for parking on campus during 7:30am and 5:00 pm, Monday- Friday will be $50. (This includes 15 minute and 30 minute spaces and visitor lots).
Motorcycle Permits are $25 for the academic year.

Vehicle Registrations for the 2009-2010 school year will begin online on August 1, 2009. All vehicles brought to campus must be registered by midnight on September 1, 2009. (Please note a vehicle is not registered until the decals are placed on the vehicle according to the instructions.) To register your vehicle, proceed to the “Personal” section of the WIN page, choose “Register Your Vehicle” and complete the formatted screen.

Graduate students (Excluding Law/MBA who have their own dates and location for distribution) who register a vehicle by Sunday, August 17, 2009, at 3:00 pm, can pick up their decals on the distribution dates in Benson University Center. YOUR VALID WAKE FOREST IDENTIFICATION CARD IS REQUIRED TO PICK UP YOUR DECALS. Distribution dates for all students without Campus PO Boxes will be held in Benson University Center Room 406 as follows:

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 : 9am-4pm
Thursday, August 27, 2009: 9am-4pm.

If you have not registered your vehicle by August 17, 2009 @ 3:00pm, or you are unable to attend the “Distribution Sessions” in Benson during the designated times, you will need to come to the Parking Management office in the HS Moore building. (Building number 17A on campus maps) Decal pick up at Parking Management will begin Friday, August 28, 2009. Our hours are 8:30am-4pm Monday-Friday. Keep in mind, Monday, September 7, 2009 is a University holiday and Parking Management will be closed. YOUR WFU ID CARD IS REQUIRED TO PICK UP YOUR DECALS.

My Experience at Wake Forest University Divinity has been a very unique one. Coming from a business background to this theological world was challenging. However, the challenges have made me stronger and wiser. The impartations, the revelations, and the information has caused me to think critically about ministry and the ministry gift that is with me. I would not trade the Divinity school or my second home (The Library) for the world.

Interview – Melissa Clodfelter

Hey all! Melissa Clodfelter is one of our most beloved faculty here at Wake Div. Melissa not only team-teaches the Art of Ministry classes and works closely with second-year students during their internships; she also provides frequent moments of respite in the midst of a sometimes hectic school schedule. Her office is always open (but, of course, appointments work best). Here is a little more about her and what she’s all about. Get to know her early, and visit her frequently. Enjoy!

Director of Vocational Formation

1. Who are you? I am the Director of Vocational Formation at WFUSD and the Coordinator of Coaching at The Center for Congregational Health. I am
the mom of a middle schooler and a spouse.

2. How would you describe Wake Div School? WFUSD is a community of learners who pursue academic excellence and have the opportunity to more deeply discern what meaningful work would be for them.

3. What will be your role working with first year students, second year students, and third year students? I facilitate small groups in Art of Ministry I and join Dr. Crainshaw in some teaching in the course. I help first year students think about internships for their second year. I also have vocational
discernment conversations with them. I oversee Art of Ministry II and facilitate a small group. I assist third year students in thinking about resumes, interviews, networking, and jobs. I also coach alums in their ministry settings.

4. What do you enjoy the most about your position at Wake, in relationship to your interactions with students? I love partnering with students and supporting their learning and growth! I love asking the risky questions that facilitate leaps for them.

5. What is one place that 1st years new to the Winston-Salem area HAVE
to know about before coming (restaraunts, fun spots, etc.)? Dewey’s Bakery makes the absolute best birthday cake. Make sure you check out the Reynolda gardens and we’re so close to Boone and Blowing Rock…you should take that in when you need fresh scenery!

6. What book would be helpful to read this summer to prepare, just a little bit, for Divinity school? If you haven’t read Parker Palmer’s Let Your Life Speak, that’s a good one to help think about where you’re headed.
